Quincy Jones Admits Ray Charles Got Him Addicted To Heroin

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – Quincy Jones was an ongoing visitor The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter digital broadcast with an end goal to advance his new Netflix narrative, Quincy.

Amid the discussion, the music business legend uncovered Ray Charles had him snared on heroin for a five-month time span when he was only 15 years of age.

"After we completed at the Washington Social Club and a few different ones, we'd all go down to Jackson Street to the Elks Club," he clarified. "That is the place all the bebop stick sessions were. No one got paid. We didn't care the slightest bit.

"When they got done with playing they'd go over in the corner and they had it on their thumb. I just snuck in the line and got me a little hit."

Jones, 85, admitted he would purchase the heroin from a Harlem merchant they called Detroit Red — also called Malcolm X. He said had he not tumbled down a trip of stairs and been put on bed rest, he never would've had an opportunity to deal with what the medication was doing to him.

"The slip-ups are what enable you to develop and learn," he said. "That was a major one. [If I hadn't fallen.] I would have been in New York, where I was hanging out with [jazz musician] Charlie Parker. I would have been an addict for eternity. Winged animal was in every case high. Thank god we did it and got it over with."
